What is your name, birthdate, nationality, residence?
My name is Alex Bergomi. I was born on March 19, 2008. I live near Zurich, Switzerland.
What languages do you speak?
I am fluent in English, German, Italian, Bulgarian, and French.
At what age did you start playing tennis?
I started playing tennis when I was three years old.
Are there other tennis players in your family?
Yes, my mom’s side of the family is a tennis family in Bulgaria. My mom was also a professional player, with a career-best WTA ranking of No. 62 in singles and No. 39 in doubles.
In which tennis clubs do you train and play?
I mostly train at TC Kilchberg, and I play for the men’s team of TC Seeblick. Both clubs are near Zurich.
Who is your coach?
My coach is Jerome Benoit.
What is your greatest strength as a player, and what do you need to improve?
My greatest strengths are my stamina and forehand, but I need to improve my serve.
What is your ranking?
My best ITF Junior ranking was No. 453, and I am currently ranked No. 82 in the Swiss men’s ranking.
What have been your greatest successes so far?
This year, I reached three singles finals and two doubles finals at ITF J60 tournaments. The biggest highlight was winning the summer U18 Swiss National Championship in July. In 2022, I also became world champion with the Swiss team.
In which countries have you played tournaments?
I have played in most countries in Europe, as well as Tunisia, Kuwait, and Bahrain. The most “exotic” countries I have visited in Europe for tennis are Albania, Belarus, and Russia.
You will soon begin your college tennis journey at Santa Clara University in NCAA Division I. Can you tell us how the recruitment process started and how you eventually received the opportunity to join the team?
The recruitment process with Santa Clara University started in August 2025, but I had been in constant contact with the coach since my visit there in February 2025 and sent several videos of my matches. It was a very lengthy process, and I first had to get academically cleared in order to be eligible for the tennis team. Once that was done, I went through the regular university application process, got accepted into the university in December, and signed with the team thereafter.
What were the most important factors in your decision to choose Santa Clara University, and what advice would you give to junior players hoping to be recruited by an NCAA Division I program?
For me, the most important factor was definitely the communication I had with coaches Niall and Josh, as well as the strong reputation of the university and the team’s results. My advice is to try to visit the places, because it is one thing to see pictures, but a completely different thing to actually be there and feel what the place is like in real life.
What equipment brands do you currently use, and are you sponsored by any of them?
I currently use Babolat racquets, strings, and grips, and Asics shoes and clothes. I have agreements with both brands.
What is your next goal?
My next goal is to adapt quickly to the environment at Santa Clara University and have a strong first season there.
What is your tennis dream?
My biggest dream has always been to play the Olympic Games for Switzerland and become a Top 10 ATP player.
Who is your favorite player and why?
Novak Djokovic is definitely my favorite player because of his overall game style and mentality. I also like Carlos Alcaraz a lot for his aggressive game style and speed on court.
What do you enjoy doing outside of tennis?
Outside of tennis, I enjoy doing all kinds of sports and spending time with my girlfriend and friends.
Who would you like to dedicate this interview to?
I would like to dedicate this interview to my mom, who sadly passed away three years ago. She was the person who introduced me to this sport and always did everything for me to become a better player and person.
