What is your name, birthdate, nationality, residence?
My name is Aidan Shokrani. I was born on September 4, 2008. I am Iranian-Canadian, originally from North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. I recently moved to DeKalb, Illinois, where I attend Northern Illinois University.
What languages do you speak?
I speak English and Farsi.
At what age did you start playing tennis?
I started playing tennis when I was around seven years old.
Are there other tennis players in your family?
Yes, my dad played competitive tennis in Iran and later played NCAA college tennis in the United States, so tennis has always been a big part of my family.
In which tennis club or program do you train?
Growing up, I trained at Hollyburn Country Club in West Vancouver, Canada. I am now continuing my tennis career at Northern Illinois University as part of the NCAA Division I men’s tennis program.
Who are your coaches?
My current college coaches are Coach Vidal and Coach Gorbunova. Back home in Vancouver, I have also worked with Rob Byron, Atton Burrell, and Connor Lennox, who have all played an important role in my development.
What is your greatest strength as a player, and what do you need to improve?
My greatest strengths are my competitiveness and passion for the game. I love competing and fighting through difficult matches, and I never like giving up. The biggest area I want to continue improving is the mental side of my game. Becoming mentally stronger and more consistent will help me become a more complete player.
What is your age category and ranking?
I competed in the U18 category in Canada. My UTR has reached approximately 10, and I have also competed internationally with an ITF Junior ranking around No. 1900.
What have been your greatest successes so far?
Some of my greatest achievements have been representing British Columbia at the U18 Outdoor Canadian Nationals, finishing fifth at the U18 BC Outdoor Provincials, and being a U16 BC Indoor Provincial Doubles finalist. I have also competed internationally in ITF junior events. I was captain of my high school senior tennis team and helped the team earn multiple provincial podium finishes. One of my biggest accomplishments so far has been earning the opportunity to continue my tennis career at the NCAA Division I level with Northern Illinois University.
In which countries have you played tournaments?
I have competed in tournaments in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
What equipment brands do you currently use, and are you sponsored by any of them?
I currently play with a Wilson Blade V9 16×19 racket with Solinco Hyper-G strings. I wear ASICS tennis shoes and mainly Nike clothing. I am currently not sponsored by any of these brands.
What is your next goal?
My next goal is to develop my game at the NCAA Division I level, earn opportunities in the Northern Illinois University lineup, and continue improving as a player. Another major goal of mine is to put myself in a position to represent Iran internationally in the future.
What is your tennis dream?
My tennis dream is to see how far I can take the sport and compete at the highest level possible. Right now, I am excited to begin my journey in NCAA Division I college tennis. One of my biggest dreams is to represent Iran internationally, especially in the Davis Cup and, one day, the Olympic Games. Representing my Iranian heritage on that stage would mean a lot to me.
Who is your favorite player and why?
My favorite player is Ben Shelton. I love the energy and passion he brings to the court and the way he competes. He plays with a lot of personality and confidence, which makes him exciting to watch.
What do you enjoy doing outside of tennis?
Outside of tennis, I enjoy soccer, traveling, following sports, business, and spending time with my friends and family. I also really enjoy coaching younger tennis players and helping them develop their games and love for tennis.
Who would you like to dedicate this interview to?
I would like to dedicate this interview to my family and my coaches. They have supported me throughout my tennis journey and made many sacrifices to help me pursue my goals. I would also like to dedicate it to all of my family and relatives in Iran. They are always in my thoughts, and I hope everyone stays safe. I am proud of my Iranian roots and hope that one day I can make them proud by representing Iran on the international tennis stage.
