Introduce yourself: Name, Age, Date of Birth, Nationality, City of Residence
My name is Oscar Van Heerden. I am 14 years old and I was born in 2012. I live in North Wales. I am Welsh, and my dad is South African.
What languages do you speak?
I speak English fluently and know a small amount of Spanish.
At what age did you start playing tennis?
I started playing tennis when I was around five years old, but I only began training seriously and competing regularly when I was 11.
Are there other tennis players in your family?
My younger brother also plays tennis, and my great auntie used to play as well.
In which tennis club do you train?
I train at multiple tennis clubs across North Wales, including my school, local tennis clubs, and regional tennis centres.
What is your coaching team?
I train with First Advantage Tennis.
What is your weekly training routine?
On Mondays, I hit with a player from my local clubโs first team. On Tuesdays, I have a one-to-one lesson followed by a group session. On Wednesdays, I train in a group with other top players from North Wales. On Thursdays, I train at a college where I play against boarders and other strong players. On Fridays, I have another one-to-one lesson, followed by a group session after school with older players.
What is your greatest strength as a player, and what do you need to improve?
My strongest shots are my first serve and my attacking forehand. The shot I want to improve the most is my drop shot.
What is your age category and national ranking?
I compete in the Under 14 category. My current Great Britain ranking is No. 222 in Under 14s, and I am currently ranked No. 1 in North Wales for my age.
What have been your greatest successes so far?
My biggest achievements so far are winning the North Wales Under 14 Singles and Doubles Championships this year, finishing runner-up in a Grade 3 doubles tournament, and reaching the quarter-finals of the Road to Wimbledon, which was an amazing experience.
In which countries have you played tournaments?
I have competed in tournaments across Wales, England, and Spain.
Do you have any sponsors?
I do not have any sponsors at the moment, but I would love to be sponsored by Nike or Asics in the future.
What is your goal for 2026?
My goal is to finish the year ranked in the Top 50 in Great Britain for Under 14s.
What is your tennis dream?
My biggest dream in tennis is to win a Grand Slam, especially Wimbledon. I would also love to represent my country, which would be an incredible achievement.
Which player would you most like to meet and why?
I would love to meet Carlos Alcaraz because of everything he has achieved at such a young age. I really admire his positive attitude and the way he never gives up, no matter what the score is.
What do you enjoy doing outside of tennis?
Outside of tennis, I enjoy running for my school in athletics. I also enjoy subjects such as PE, science, maths, and a few others.
Who would you like to dedicate this interview to?
I would like to dedicate this interview to my coach, who has helped me improve massively over the last few years. I would also like to thank my parents for everything they have done for me, from driving me all over the country to supporting my coaching and tournaments. Finally, I want to thank my little brother, who has spent countless hours watching me play and has always supported me.
