What is your name, birthdate, nationality, residence?
My name is Shaurya Swarup. I was born on November 3, 2007. I am Indian and I am from Kolkata, India.
What languages do you speak?
I speak English and Hindi, and I am also learning Spanish.
At what age did you start playing tennis?
I started playing tennis when I was six years old.
Are there other tennis players in your family?
My grandfather was a Davis Cup umpire, so tennis has always had a connection with my family.
In which tennis academy do you train?
I currently train at Gomez Tennis Academy in Barcelona, Spain.
Who are your coaches?
My coaches are Saurav Panja and Carlos Gomez.
What is your greatest strength as a player, and what do you need to improve?
My greatest strength is my competitiveness and my ability to fight through difficult matches. I never like to give up, regardless of the situation. I am always looking to improve every part of my game and become a more complete player.
What is your age category and ranking?
I am 18 years old. I was ranked in the Top 600 in the world and was among the Top 10 Indians in the international rankings.
What have been your greatest successes so far?
One of my biggest achievements has been reaching over 12 ITF Junior finals. I have also won an ITF J60 doubles title in Singapore and recently won a national-level tournament in Spain during my training stint in Barcelona.
In which countries have you played tournaments?
I have played tournaments in India, Spain, Singapore, Malaysia, the United States, Canada, China, Japan, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and other countries.
What equipment brands do you currently use, and are you sponsored by any of them?
I currently use a Yonex EZONE racket with Solinco Hyper-G strings. I do not currently have any sponsors.
What is your next goal?
I am moving to the United States to attend Northwestern University, where I will study Manufacturing and Design Engineering and compete in the Big Ten Conference as a walk-on on the tennis roster. My goal is to continue developing as a player and compete at the highest level possible.
What is your tennis dream?
My biggest tennis dream is to become the best version of myself as a player and see how far I can take the sport. I want to keep pushing my limits, compete at the highest level I can reach, and be better than I was yesterday.
Who is your favorite player and why?
Roger Federer has always been my favorite player. I admire his technique, creativity, and style of play, but especially the way he carried himself both on and off the court.
What do you enjoy doing outside of tennis?
Outside of tennis, I enjoy working out, cycling, trekking, photography, playing tabla, and following Formula 1. I also really enjoy traveling and exploring new places.
Who would you like to dedicate this interview to?
I would like to dedicate this interview to my family, especially my grandparents, my coaches, and everyone who has supported me throughout my tennis journey. Their support has played a huge role in helping me get to where I am today.
