Sebastian Szankowich · Interview, August 2026

What is your name, birthdate, nationality, residence?
My name is Sebastian Szankowich. I was born in Vienna, Austria, on October 1, 2008. I am Austrian and I have lived in Parndorf, Burgenland, my entire life.
What languages do you speak?
German is my native language. I have also been learning English at school for eight years, so I can speak English relatively well. I have been learning Italian at school for three years as well, although speaking Italian is still a little difficult for me.
At what age did you start playing tennis?
I started playing tennis when I was seven years old. Until I was 13, I played mainly for fun. For the past four years, I have been playing competitively, with several training sessions every week both on and off the court.
Are there other tennis players in your family?
Yes, my brother also plays tennis and is already quite good for his age. My father plays tennis as well, but only recreationally.
In which tennis club do you train?
I have been playing tennis in Parndorf since I started, and I still train and play there today. We will see which clubs I will play for in the future.
Who is your coach?
My coach is Karol Komora, who is a former ATP doubles player.
What is your greatest strength as a player, and what do you need to improve?
I think my greatest strength is my versatility on the court. I like to change the rhythm during rallies and make my opponents play outside their comfort zone. In general, I still need to work on every part of my game and improve every single shot by increasing its quality. I can already see that this improves from year to year through all the training I do, both on and off the court.
What is your age category and national ranking?
In Austria, I currently play both in the men’s category and in the junior category. This is my final year as a junior before I will only be able to compete in the men’s category. My highest national ranking was No. 71, and I am currently ranked No. 92. My goal is to stay inside the Top 100 before I leave the junior category.
What have been your greatest successes so far?
My biggest success so far has been winning a Category 2 tournament in Austria. I have also reached the doubles final of a Category 1 tournament. In addition, I have already won several prize-money tournaments in the men’s category.
In which countries have you played tournaments?
So far, I have played tournaments in Austria and Slovakia.
What equipment brands do you currently use, and are you sponsored by any of them?
Since I started playing tennis competitively, I have used Babolat rackets, strings, and bags. For clothing, I usually wear Nike or HEAD because I like the clothes from these brands the most.
What is your next goal?
My next goal is to maintain and improve my ranking and try to win matches at international tournaments.
What is your tennis dream?
My biggest dream is to win an ATP Tour tournament one day.
Who is your favorite player and why?
My favorite player is Jannik Sinner. I really like his mentality and the quality of his shots. I also support him because he speaks fluent German and lives close to the Austrian border.
What do you enjoy doing outside of tennis?
Outside of tennis, I also really enjoy playing table tennis and basketball. In winter, I like going skiing. I also enjoy watching the world’s top tennis players on TV for hours.
Who would you like to dedicate this interview to?
I would like to dedicate this interview to my coach because without him, I would never have been able to reach the level I am at today. I owe him a lot for all the success I have achieved so far. I would also like to dedicate this interview to my mother. Especially before I had my driving licence, she drove me everywhere, to every tournament and every training session, and supported me as much as she could. She has invested a lot of time in me and my tennis, and I am very grateful for that.
