What is your name, birthdate, nationality, residence?
My name is Kate Liu. I was born on May 8, 2012. I am an American citizen and I live in Fremont, California.
What languages do you speak?
I speak English and Chinese, and I am currently learning Spanish.
At what age did you start playing tennis?
I started playing tennis when I was seven and a half years old.
Are there other tennis players in your family?
Yes, my brother also plays tennis.
In which tennis academy do you train?
I train at Elguera Tennis Academy.
Who is your coach?
My coach is Michael Elguera.
What is your greatest strength as a player, and what do you need to improve?
My greatest strength as a player is my ability to fight and treat my tennis matches as a problem that I need to solve instead of an opponent that I need to beat. One thing I need to improve is having clear strategies when I play and being able to quickly change my strategy according to how my opponent is playing.
What is your age category and national ranking?
I play in the 14 and Under age category. My combined national ranking is No. 76, and my doubles ranking is No. 35.
What have been your greatest successes so far?
My greatest success so far is winning a Level 2 Doubles Nationals title and a Level 3 Singles Sectionals title. I have also reached the doubles quarterfinals of the National Easter Bowl. Highest 12s ranking 34 in the USA and won my first 18s L5 last week.
In which countries have you played tournaments?
So far, I have only played tournaments in the United States.
What equipment brands do you currently use, and are you sponsored by any of them?
I currently use Tecnifibre for my rackets, Solinco for my strings, and Nike for my shoes. I am sponsored by both Tecnifibre and Solinco.
What is your next goal?
My next goal is to win a Level 3 tournament in U14.
What is your tennis dream?
My tennis dream is to get recruited by a great Division I college or university and play one of the junior Grand Slams.
Who is your favorite player and why?
My favorite player is Jannik Sinner because I admire his ability to stay calm and composed during stressful situations, and I look up to his discipline on court.
What do you enjoy doing outside of tennis?
Outside of tennis, I enjoy reading, hanging out with my friends, and going shopping with my mom.
Who would you like to dedicate this interview to?
I would like to dedicate this interview to my mom, who encouraged me to play tennis in the beginning, and my coach, Michael Elguera, who has developed and trained me since I started playing.
