What is your name, birthdate, nationality, residence?
My name is Rúben Duarte Oliveira. I was born on April 7, 2016. I am Portuguese and I live in Porto.
What languages do you speak?
My first language is Portuguese, and I have been learning English since primary school.
At what age did you start playing tennis?
I started playing tennis when I was five years old, so I have already been playing tennis for half of my life. At the beginning, tennis was just something fun to do. Now it is still fun, but it has also become a big part of who I am.
Are there other tennis players in your family?
Yes, my sister also plays tennis.
In which tennis academy do you train?
I train at Ginásio Clube de Santo Tirso – Tennis Academy.
Who are your coaches?
My coaches are Luís Martins, Diogo Neves, André Lopes, and Miguel Barros.
What is your greatest strength as a player, and what do you need to improve?
One of my biggest strengths is my forehand. I want to improve my serve.
What is your age category and national ranking?
I am 10 years old, so I am still a U10 player, but this year I started competing in U12 tournaments. At the moment, I am No. 92 in the Portuguese U12 national ranking. Among the 10-year-old players in the U12 ranking, I am in the Top 10 in Portugal.
What have been your greatest successes so far?
This year, one of my biggest achievements has been reaching U12 singles semifinals and doubles finals while still being 10 years old. I also won tournaments in the U9 and U10 categories when I played at those levels. A good match is not only one that you win. If I learn something from it and improve, that is also very important.
In which countries have you played tournaments?
Besides Portugal, I have also played tournaments in Spain, in Madrid and Seville.
What equipment brands do you currently use, and are you sponsored by any of them?
I play with a Babolat racket and wear Babolat, Wilson, and Tecnifibre clothing. I use Babolat shoes on hard courts, K-Swiss on clay courts, and Genesis strings. I always play with a cap. At the moment, I am not sponsored by any of these brands, but one day I would love to be sponsored by brands that believe in the way I play and the player I am becoming.
What is your next goal?
My next goal is to become a more complete player and feel comfortable in any kind of match and on any surface. I want to keep learning, improving, and getting better every day.
What is your tennis dream?
I would love to be part of Team Europe at the Laver Cup. Big dreams give you something to work for. I have to keep improving, move up through the levels and rankings, and keep proving myself on court.
Who is your favorite player and why?
My favorite player is Carlos Alcaraz. I really like his energy on court and the way he can do a bit of everything. He plays with a lot of intensity and still looks like he is enjoying himself. His energy is contagious. I also follow and admire Nuno Borges and Jaime Faria, two of the best Portuguese players on the ATP Tour.
What do you enjoy doing outside of tennis?
Outside of tennis, I really enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I also love drawing and playing in the pool with my sister.
