Sophia Hernandez · Interview, October 2026

What is your name, birthdate, nationality, residence?
My name is Sophia Hernandez. I was born on September 5, 2012. I am from Honduras and Nicaragua, and I currently live in Miami, Florida. I am incredibly proud of my Central American roots and hope to inspire young athletes to believe that their dreams are possible, regardless of where their journey begins.
What languages do you speak?
I speak English and Spanish fluently, and I am currently learning Russian. I love learning languages because tennis connects people from around the world, and I believe understanding different cultures helps me grow both as an athlete and as a person.
At what age did you start playing tennis?
I started playing tennis at 11, almost 12 years old. Before tennis, I tried ballet, gymnastics, soccer, swimming, martial arts, jazz, acrobatics, and many other sports. Then I tried tennis, and from my very first lesson, I fell in love with it. I knew I was starting later than many competitive players, but instead of feeling discouraged, I saw it as motivation to work even harder. Starting later taught me that your beginning does not determine your future, and I believe passion, discipline, and determination matter more than when you start.
Are there other tennis players in your family?
I was the first person in my family to pick up a tennis racket. One of my cousins trained alongside me briefly, and my older cousin started playing about a year ago. It is special to see tennis becoming part of my family’s life, and I have always been surrounded by my family’s love, encouragement, and support.
In which tennis club do you train?
I train individually with Mariana Correa and attend Luxma Tennis Academy in the afternoons. Both environments challenge me to improve my technique, consistency, and competitive mindset.
Who are your coaches?
My coaches are Mariana Correa and Luis Manuel Lopez. I am incredibly grateful for their dedication, patience, and guidance. They constantly push me to become a stronger player and help me understand the importance of discipline, accepting feedback, and being coachable.
What is your greatest strength as a player, and what do you need to improve?
My greatest strengths are my fighting spirit, mental toughness, and determination. No matter the score, I always try to fight for every point and believe I can overcome challenges. I am currently working on developing a stronger and more consistent serve.
What is your age category and national ranking?
I currently compete in Girls’ Under 14 in the United States. Although I do not have my exact national ranking available, I am focused on improving my level, gaining international experience, and continuing to climb the rankings.
What have been your greatest successes so far?
One of my proudest experiences was competing in an ITF J30 tournament in Honduras, where I played very competitive matches and gained valuable experience. Another major accomplishment was winning the doubles championship at a G2 tournament in Ecuador. Both experiences taught me the value of resilience, teamwork, and hard work.
In which countries have you played tournaments?
I have competed in the United States, Honduras, and Ecuador. Competing internationally has allowed me to face new challenges, learn from different playing styles, and connect with athletes from different backgrounds.
What equipment brands do you currently use (racket, string, shoes, clothing…), and are you sponsored by any of them?
I currently play with Yonex equipment and do not have any sponsorships at the moment. As I continue growing, I hope to partner with brands that share my values of discipline, perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication.
What is your next goal?
My next milestone is to become a better player and person than I was yesterday. I want to continue strengthening my game, growing mentally, and learning from every experience. My biggest competition is the person I was yesterday, and every day is another opportunity to become someone my younger self would be proud of.
What is your tennis dream?
My ultimate dream is to become the greatest women’s singles tennis player of all time and leave a lasting legacy in the sport. I dream of winning Grand Slam titles, reaching World No. 1, and competing on the world’s biggest stages. Beyond trophies and rankings, I want to inspire young athletes to believe in themselves and remind others that even the biggest dreams are worth chasing.
Who is your favorite player and why?
My favorite players are Aryna Sabalenka and Roger Federer. I admire Sabalenka’s aggressive playing style, powerful shots, incredible fighting spirit, and the joy she brings to the court. I admire Federer’s elegance, effortless movement, precision, and creativity. My dream is to combine Sabalenka’s power and determination with Federer’s grace and intelligence to develop my own unique playing style.
What do you enjoy doing outside of tennis?
Outside of tennis, I enjoy boxing, physical training, yoga, swimming, making bracelets, attending church, and spending time with my family. My faith is especially important because it teaches me gratitude, humility, patience, and perseverance.
Who would you like to dedicate this interview to?
First and foremost, I dedicate this interview to God and Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. I also dedicate it to my family, whose sacrifices, unconditional love, and belief in my dreams mean everything to me. To my coaches, Mariana Correa and Luis Manuel Lopez, thank you for your patience, dedication, and for challenging me to become a better player every day. Finally, I dedicate this to everyone who has supported, encouraged, and believed in me.
