Lev Kosterin · Interview, October 2026

What is your name, birthdate, nationality, residence?
My name is Lev Kosterin. I was born on November 26, 2015, in Ukraine, and I live in Kyiv. I’m 10 years old and will turn 11 in November. I’m a young tennis player with big dreams and a strong desire to improve every day.
What languages do you speak?
Ukrainian is my native language, and I speak it every day. I also speak English quite well and continue to improve. I started learning German about a year ago, although I’m not fluent yet. In the future, I would also love to learn French.
At what age did you start playing tennis?
I started playing tennis when I was four years old, and I loved it from the very beginning. I used to run happily to my training sessions! Until I was six, I trained with a friend, just the two of us, and tennis was all about having fun. My coach told me I was doing well, which encouraged me to keep going. At the age of seven, I started playing local tournaments. I won first place at my very first local SmashUp tournament, and that was a special moment for me.
Are there other tennis players in your family?
I’m the only tennis player in my family. My parents always come to my tournaments, support me, and motivate me to keep working hard. I’m very grateful to them because their support means a lot to me.
In which tennis club do you train?
I train at Beiko Tennis School, where I have the opportunity to work with amazing coaches who guide, motivate, and support me every day. I train six days a week, usually for three to four hours a day. I also do physical conditioning three times a week. Tennis takes a lot of time and effort, but I enjoy working hard and seeing myself improve.
Who are your coaches?
My coach is Talyna Beiko. I’m very grateful to her for everything she does for me. She recognises my strengths and helps me develop them, while also encouraging me to work on the areas where I need to improve. Her confidence and calmness inspire me. She helps me believe in myself and reminds me that progress comes through hard work, patience, and consistency.
What is your greatest strength as a player, and what do you need to improve?
I think my forehand, slice shots, and volleys are among my strengths. Sometimes, my tactics also give me an advantage on the court. I’m only 10, so staying calm and confident in every situation is still something I’m learning. Every match gives me more experience and helps me grow as a player. I especially want to improve my serve because sometimes it lets me down.
What is your age category and national ranking?
I compete in the Under-12 category, and I’m currently ranked 15th in Ukraine in my age category.
What have been your greatest successes so far?
One of my first memorable achievements was winning first place at a local SmashUp tournament when I was seven. In December 2025, after moving into the Under-12 category, I won first place in two categories at the Amazing Yonex Cup U12. More recently, I reached the singles final and won the doubles title at the Sportelitbud Cup U12 in Lutsk. I also competed at the All-Ukrainian Autumn Under-12 tournament, Chervona Ruta. I lost in the round of 16, but I played what I consider the best match of my career so far. It lasted three and a half hours! I’m grateful to my opponent for such a challenging match, and I went on to win the consolation draw.
In which countries have you played tournaments?
This year, I played my first Tennis Europe Junior Tour tournament in Chișinău, Moldova. It was an important experience and a great opportunity to learn. I also recently returned from a tennis camp in Salou, Spain. I’m very grateful to the Marta Kostyuk Foundation for giving me this opportunity. It was an unforgettable experience, full of tennis, new emotions, and motivation to keep improving.
What equipment brands do you currently use (racket, string, shoes, clothing…), and are you sponsored by any of them?
I play with a Wilson Ultra V5 100 L racket and use String-Kong Banana Bite strings, 1.30 mm. I wear ASICS tennis shoes, and I like Nike and Wilson clothing. At the moment, I don’t have any sponsors, but I’m focused on working hard, developing my game, and gaining more experience.
What is your next goal?
My next goals are to improve my technique, add more power to my shots, and gain more experience in international competitions. I know that achieving these goals takes time and consistent work, so I’m ready to keep learning and pushing myself.
What is your tennis dream?
My dreams are big! I want to win 26 Grand Slam titles, build my own tennis academy one day, play against Novak Djokovic at Roland-Garros, and beat Ben Shelton at the US Open. I know these are ambitious goals, but I believe it’s important to dream big and work hard to make those dreams come true.
Who is your favorite player and why?
My favourite player is Novak Djokovic. He inspires me with his technique, endurance, discipline, and mental strength. I admire the way he competes and continues to challenge himself at the highest level. I would love to develop the same level of discipline and endurance and become technically excellent like him.
What do you enjoy doing outside of tennis?
I don’t have much free time because I have tennis training, tournaments, and school. But when I do have time, I love cycling and sledding down hills in winter. I also enjoy travelling with my family, especially to the Carpathian Mountains. I love the mountains and spending time there.
Who would you like to dedicate this interview to?
First of all, I want to thank my parents. Without their hard work, patience, support, and belief in me, I wouldn’t have achieved as much as I have so far. I’m also very grateful to my coach, Talyna Ivanivna Beiko, for believing in me, helping me improve my skills, and supporting my development as a player. Finally, I want to thank the entire Beiko Tennis School team for their work, guidance, and encouragement. I’m lucky to have people around me who help me become a better tennis player every day.
