🎙️ Hazel Tran | Interview, August 2026

Introduce yourself: Name, Age, Date of Birth, Nationality, City of Residence
My name is Hazel Tran. I am 13 years old and I was born in November 2012. I am American and I am from El Dorado Hills, California.
What languages do you speak?
I speak English and conversational Vietnamese.
At what age did you start playing tennis?
I started playing tennis when I was six years old as a fun family activity. When I turned 11, I became more competitive and started playing tournaments. Since then, tennis has become a significant part of my life.
Are there other tennis players in your family?
My whole family enjoys playing tennis: my mom, my dad, and my three sisters, Ava, Sophie, and Chelsea. Being part of a tennis family is fun because we constantly challenge and encourage each other.
In which tennis club do you train?
I train at Broadstone Sports Club in Folsom, California. It is a special place to practice, and the players I train with are friendly and supportive.
What is your coaching team?
My tennis coaches are Doug Atkinson, Norm Shetty, and Kayvon Karimi. They help me improve my tennis skills and have taught me important lessons about discipline, commitment, patience, respect, and confidence.
What is your greatest strength as a player, and what do you need to improve?
My greatest strengths are my determination and hard work ethic. I especially love my backhand and my footwork, which help me be ready for every ball. I am currently focused on improving my serve so it becomes more reliable, and on being more consistent under pressure.
What is your age category and national ranking?
I compete in the U14 category and I am ranked among the Top 2,000 nationally. My goal is to become a top player.
What have been your greatest successes so far?
My greatest success so far is training and competing at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain. Practicing among talented players from around the world helped me become stronger as a tennis player and gave me unforgettable experiences on and off the court.
In which countries have you played tournaments?
I have played tournaments in the United States and Spain.
Do you have any sponsors?
I currently do not have any sponsors. I plan to reach out to companies and organizations for sponsorship opportunities.
What is your goal for 2026?
My goal for 2026 is to significantly improve my WTN while competing with confidence and learning from every match.
What is your tennis dream?
My tennis dream is to play Division 1 college tennis while receiving a well-rounded education and continuing to grow as an athlete.
Which player would you most like to meet and why?
My favorite tennis player is Maria Sakkari. I aspire to be as strong as her, and I love her fearless mindset.
What do you enjoy doing outside of tennis?
Outside of tennis, I love running and I run for my middle school’s cross country and track and field teams. I also enjoy skiing in the winter, playing piano, caring for my bunnies and dog, cooking, and baking.
Who would you like to dedicate this interview to?
I would like to dedicate this interview to my family: my mom, my dad, and my three sisters. Throughout my tennis journey, my family supports me in many ways. If we are not on tennis courts, we are talking about tennis. Our next family trip is the US Open.
