🎙️Maria Fernanda Poma Coronado | Interview, November 2025

Hello, introduce yourself please.

My name is María Fernanda Poma. I was born on February 12, 2010, I’m 15 years old, and I’m from Lima, Peru.

What languages do you speak?

I speak Spanish and English.

At what age did you start playing tennis?

I started playing tennis when I was 6 years old.

Are there other tennis players in your family?

My dad and my grandfather used to play tennis as a hobby, which is how I first got into the sport.

In which club do you train?

I currently train at Los Inkas Golf Club.

Who are your coaches?

My private coaches are Fernando Lituma and Leslie Espinoza.

What is your weekly training routine?

I’m homeschooled, so in the mornings I do 1 hour of gym and 2 hours of tennis — and in the afternoons I do 1 hour of on-court footwork and 2 more hours of tennis.

As an athlete, what is your greatest quality and what do you need to improve?

I believe one of my biggest strengths is my aggressive style of play and the way I take control during points.
Something I would like to improve is my tolerance for mistakes.

What is your junior category and your national ranking?

I’m currently in the U16 category and I’m ranked number 2 in my country.

What has been your greatest achievement?

One of my biggest achievements was representing Peru in the South American Championship, where we finished first of our group and that way we qualified for the 2024 World Junior Finals.

In which countries have you already played tournament?

I’ve played around all South America except Guyana and Venezuela, and I’ve also played tournaments in France, Germany, the United States, and the Czech Republic.

Do you have any sponsors?

Now I am being sponsored by Wilson Peru.

What is your goal for 2026?

My goal for 2026 is to represent my country again in the South American Championship and qualify for the Billie Jean King Cup Junior.

What is your tennis dream?

My biggest dream is to make the people who’ve been with me from the start proud.

Who are your favorite tennis players?

My favorite male player is Rafael Nadal because he never stops fighting and he is left handed like me, and my favorite female player is Elena Rybakina because of how she controls herself.

What do you like to do outside of tennis?

When i’m out of court, I love cooking and shopping. They are really fun activities for me to do and they always help me to get rid of stress.

To which people would you like to dedicate this interview?

I would like to dedicate this interview to my brother because he always supports me and inspires me to give it all in everything I do.

Thanks a lot María!
