Sara Maria Gherdan | Interview, February 2026

Hello, introduce yourself please.

My name is Sara Maria Gherdan, but everyone calls me Sara. I am ten years old; I was born on January 18, 2016. I am Romanian and I live in Oradea, a city in Romania near the Hungarian border.

What languages do you speak?

I speak Romanian and a little English.

At what age did you start playing tennis?

I started playing tennis when I was six and a half.

Are there other tennis players in your family?

My little sister also plays tennis; she is eight years old.

In which club do you train?

I train in Oradea, at the TCB tennis club.

Who are your coaches?

My tennis team consists of:

  • Tennis coach: Imre Boros
  • Physical trainer: Dana Marinau
  • Physiotherapist: Nicu Horga
  • Massage therapist: Renata Boros
What is your weekly training routine?

My weekly training schedule is as follows: I train in tennis five times a week, from Monday to Friday. Twice a week, I train with two boys, two other days with just one, and once a week, I train alone. In addition to my two weekly tennis training sessions, I have physical conditioning, two physiotherapy sessions, and a 30-minute massage.

What is your greatest strength as a player, and what do you need to improve?

My greatest strength lies in my mental game. I don’t get angry, I don’t yell, and I don’t throw my racket, because the match isn’t over until I’ve shaken my opponent’s hand. I need to be more consistent and improve my net play.

What is your age category and your national ranking?

I play in the under-10 category and am ranked 7th nationally in that age group. I also recently started playing in the under-12 category.

What have been your greatest successes so far?

In 2025, I participated in a Mediterranean World Tennis Championship tournament at the Rafael Nadal Academy. I won first place in the under-9 category and second place in the under-10 doubles.

In which countries have you played tournaments?

I played in Spain, Bulgaria and Romania.

Do you have any sponsors?

I don’t have any sponsors at the moment, apart from my parents 🙂

What is your goal for 2026?

My goal for 2026 is to finish in the top 3 of my U10 category in Romania and in the top 50 in the U12 category. I will participate in 7 international tournaments in 2026 and my goal is to win at least one of them.

What is your tennis dream?

I dream of winning at least one of the 4 Grand Slams, breaking into the top 10 of the WTA rankings, and getting closer to Simona Halep’s results.

Who are your favorite tennis players?

My favorite WTA tennis players are Aryna Sabalenka, Simona Halep, and the Williams sisters. Among men, I like Carlos Alcaraz and Roger Federer.

What do you enjoy outside of tennis?

Besides tennis, I enjoy singing and painting.

Who would you like to dedicate this interview to?

I would like to dedicate this interview to my tennis coach, Imre Boros, because he has greatly helped me improve my game, and the results of his training are evident.

Sara, thank you for the interview 🙌
