🎙️Maria Alejandra Vargas Trigueros | Interview, October 2025

Hello, introduce yourself please.
I’m Maria Alejandra Vargas Trigueros, known as Mariale. I’m 10 years old. I was born on February 15, 2015.
I have dual nationality: Salvadoran and Guatemalan.
I live in the city of Quetzaltenango, known as Xelajú, in the Guatemalan Highlands.

What languages do you speak?
Spanish and English.

At what age did you start playing tennis?
6 and a half years old. I started to help with my ADHD and dyslexia.

Are there other tennis players in your family?
No.

What club do you train at?
I train at Cantabria Country Club.

Who are your coaches?
My coach is Cristian Chaj. It’s great to train with him because he guides me, taking into account my ADHD and cross laterality. He’s been my coach since I started, and we’re going for more. I’ve also had the opportunity to train for a week with John Wilkins of SpotSports.

What is your weekly training routine?
I train 1-2 hours daily on the court after school, Monday through Friday and Saturdays.

What is your best shot and what do you need to improve?
My best shot is my forehand. I love to attack and I’m not afraid. What I need to improve is my serve.

What is your junior category and national ranking?
I currently play U10. In El Salvador, I’m #1, and in Guatemala, I’m tied for #5 on points.

What are your best results?
In El Salvador, in singles, throughout 2025, I placed first in all the U10 national rankings, advancing through the group stage without losing a game.
In Guatemala, I reached the quarterfinals in singles, and in doubles, the semifinals.

In which countries have you played tennis before?
I’ve played in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Panama.

What’s the first country you dream of playing in?
I want to go to play in the COTECC next year in the Caribbean. I really dream of playing in a tournament in Europe or South America.

Do you have sponsors?
Not yet, but I’d love to be sponsored by HEAD. SpotSports sponsored my training with John Wilkins this year.

What’s your tennis dream?
I want to be a world leader to elevate El Salvador and Guatemala, and also earn a university scholarship and play all over the world.

Who are your favorite tennis players?
Serena Williams, Aryna Sabalenka (I love her strength), Rafa Nadal (for his endurance and resilience), Novak Djokovic (for his persistence, dedication, and the strength to prove that you can do it despite what others think), Jannik Sinner (for her humility, tranquility, and simplicity)… not only is their game spectacular, but they’re also the kind of person they seem to be when things get tough.

What do you like to do besides tennis?
Singing, painting, inventing, and creating things.

Thanks a lot Mariale!
Tennis Papers wishes you the best in your tennis life 💜🩷
